IC / OOC Boundaries and OOC Channels

Post by Solidus » Wed Feb 18, 2015 12:14 am

We've gotten rather loose with our IC/OOC boundaries lately. As we seem to be getting an influx of new players, I'd like to lay out some basic guidelines.

The OOC channels, like newbie and OOCnet are for general non-game related chatter and the occasional OOC question about game mechanics. IC information is NOT to be shared on these channels.

If someone asks a specific question about IC things on any of these channels, please keep your answers as general as possible without giving out any IC info.

This includes talking about characters, deaths, or IC occurences on the OOC channel.

If you cross the IC/OOC line, you will be asked to stop. If you continue to do it after being asked to stop, your ability to use the OOC channels will be removed.

Bumping this. I know we've had an influx in new players and I would just like to reiterate what Solidus said about how OOC channels of communication are meant to be used sparingly, especially in-game. It's not meant to be a place for idle chatter, explaining your character's IC motivations, clarifying something your character has done or said, etc.

That said, this also isn't an invitation to start gathering each other's Discord info to just take the chat off the game where no one can see it.

Keep IC stuff IC. It's the rules.

Another bump to this thread to provide a gentle reminder about the usage of OOC and discussion of the game via OOC methods.

OOC chat is meant to be for brief, necessary OOC comments. "Hey I'm going afk for a second." "Hey what's the command for this again?"

What OOC chat is NOT meant to be used for:
1. Lengthy (or any) conversations regarding your character's IC motivations and/or your future plans for that character.
2. To abuse someone OOCly.
3. To abuse admin OOCly.
4. To complain about a game issue.

We have a plethora of options available, both for game assistance (help files, the wiki, @page, @bug, @comment, @whine, newbie net) and for OOC chatter. Please use these.

Additionally, THE RULES STILL EXIST about NOT METAGAMING. We all know we have no way to keep track of that unless your OOC friends rat you out (which they won't do until you do something they don't like), but try and have a conscience and stick to the rules you agreed to. Don't ruin the game for everyone else by being a cheater. Because that's what it is. It's cheating.

The next reminder will not be so gentle.

Thanks, game on.
