Drug$$, the Druggening

Post by Rain » Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:45 am

Another drug update, you lucky lucky drug addicts.

Drugs are no longer tied directly to your character's pulse. The duration of many drug effects (and some related things, like counselling) is now based on time.

This means that:
  • Drugs will have a more predictable lifespan. Doing additional doses of the same drug whilst you're still high will prolong this lifespan, though successive doses will have less of an effect. There's some variance in the actual duration. No more doing a drug and then having it wear off within ten seconds because you timed it badly.
  • Comedowns will last a more predictable amount of time.
  • Crucially, some drug effects will continue to wear off whilst you're disconnected or OOC. This includes comedowns (yay) and counselling (oh no).
  • Because of the above, when you return from vacation you'll have a small window where you still feel all happy about the lovely trip to the New York Crater you've just had. This will rapidly wear off as you realise that oh fuck, you're back in New Carthage.
I encourage you to do as many drugs as possible in an effort to figure out how long they now last.

I like the idea of vacations as a drug effect, but it probably wont last long enough, or be strong enough to be gameable. Would be funny if people took one day vacations for the bonus.

We would just up the cost of vacation. Supply and Demand!

It’s mostly just to keep people from going CP immediately following a return from vacation because their counseling drug wore off. It’s not meant to last long, and if anyone is dumb enough to spend 7AP going on vacation rather than just getting some counseling, well...that’s on them.

It makes sense to have drugs linked to time rather than character pulse, after all how do you get rid of a hangover better than sleeping it off. Counseling being tied to time rather than character pulse doesn't make as much sense to me. Dealing with day to day things that happen specifically to your character would seem to wear more on your sanity than say sleeping for 24 hours straight then hopping out of bed and going full psycho on someone. Logging off with full counseling and then waking up with none seems a bit heavy.

I have to imagine counselling has been tuned to last an average number of real life days, it's just more predictable now since it doesn't matter whether you're spending that time connected to the game or not.

Maybe it’s just a bug, but waking up with full counseling and dropping to none in a matter of minutes has happened since the changes were implemented.

If you think it’s a bug then I would recommend @bugging it.
